OBD-II fault code

C05FC: 4WD/AWD Range Actuator Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

Range actuator position sensor reading implausible. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The range actuator position sensor tells the 4WD/AWD control module where the transfer-case range actuator is positioned. This code sets when the position signal is present but does not agree with the range or movement the module expects, such as when the reading drifts or the sensor is loose.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor reading drifted
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • 4WD/AWD range selection may be limited or disabled

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live position readings to see whether the sensor value was implausible during a shift or remains inconsistent while stationary.
  2. Check related actuator and range codes, then compare the reported actuator position with the selected range and indicator.
  3. Inspect the position sensor mounting, actuator housing, and connector for looseness, damage, contamination, or signs of movement.
  4. Watch the sensor reading during a permitted range command and gently move the harness to distinguish a loose mounting or intermittent connection from a drifting signal.
  5. If the mounting and wiring are sound, test sensor output and actuator travel against the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose position sensor or actuator mounting if that is the source of the unstable reading.
  • Repair a damaged or poorly connected sensor harness or connector.
  • Replace a position sensor that has drifted outside the manufacturer's acceptable range.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty actuator if its internal position feedback cannot track movement.

Can I keep driving?

Range selection may be limited or disabled if the module cannot trust the reported position. Avoid relying on low range for demanding terrain and drive cautiously in a range that is confirmed to be engaged.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
