OBD-II fault code

C05F8: 4WD/AWD Range Actuator Control Circuit High

What it means

Range actuator control voltage above expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The 4WD/AWD range actuator moves the transfer case between high and low range, and its control module monitors the actuator control circuit. This code sets when the circuit voltage is higher than expected, which can happen if the control wire contacts battery power or a connector has excessive resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Unable to shift between high and low range
  • 4WD/AWD warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and current 4WD/AWD fault codes to see when the high-range voltage condition occurred and whether other actuator circuit faults are present.
  2. With the vehicle safely parked, inspect the range actuator connector and harness for water, corrosion, pushed-back pins, chafing, or a wire pinched against a power source.
  3. With the code active, gently move the accessible harness while watching the scan-tool circuit reading for a change that points to an intermittent short or connection.
  4. Using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure, measure the actuator control circuit and check for an unintended connection to battery voltage.
  5. If wiring and connector checks pass, test the actuator and control module outputs according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or pinched wiring that is contacting a power source.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back connector terminals and restore the connector seal.
  • Repair a short to battery in the range actuator control circuit.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty range actuator or control module.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid attempting high-to-low range shifts while the fault is active; range selection may be unavailable. Drive cautiously on suitable roads and avoid terrain that requires low range until the system is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
