What it means
Range actuator control voltage below expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The 4WD/AWD range actuator control circuit carries the command used to shift the transfer case between high and low range where fitted. This code sets when the monitored control voltage is below its expected range, often because the circuit is shorted to ground or has a high-resistance connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Unable to shift between high and low range
- 4WD/AWD warning light on
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and range actuator status to confirm when the low-control condition occurred and whether a shift was being requested.
- Inspect the range actuator connector and harness for water ingress, corrosion, chafing, or pushed-back pins.
- With the fault active, gently wiggle the actuator harness while monitoring the control signal to check for a changing low reading.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring information to test the control wire for a short to ground and inspect connector contact quality.
- If the wiring checks pass, test the range actuator and control-module output using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose range actuator connector and restore its seal.
- Clean corroded terminals or repair a poor connection causing voltage drop.
- Repair the control wire where it is chafed or shorted to ground.
- Replace a failed range actuator if it passes wiring checks and fails testing.
- Repair a confirmed control-module output fault after verifying the circuit.
Can I keep driving?
The transfer case may be unable to shift between high and low range, so avoid driving conditions that require a range change. Do not keep retrying a shift that fails or binds, as it may add strain to the actuator or transfer case.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
