What it means
Open circuit on 4WD/AWD range actuator control. The range actuator switches between high/low range on transfer cases with reduction.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The 4WD/AWD range actuator moves the transfer case between high and low range on vehicles equipped with a reduction range. The control module monitors the actuator control circuit and sets this code when that circuit is open, interrupting the command path.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring break
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Unable to shift between high and low range
- 4WD/AWD warning light on
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and 4WD/AWD status for the attempted high-to-low or low-to-high shift and any actuator command or feedback recorded.
- Inspect the range actuator connector for a disconnected plug, pushed-back pin, corrosion, or damaged locking tab.
- Trace the range actuator wiring for breaks, chafing, or an open connection, paying close attention to flexing areas.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to test continuity through the actuator control circuit and check its power and ground feeds.
- If the external circuit is intact, follow the manufacturer's procedure to check the actuator and the control module for an internal open or failed connection.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the range actuator connector.
- Repair a broken wire or restore a pushed-back terminal in the actuator circuit.
- Clean corrosion and replace a damaged connector seal or housing.
- Replace a failed range actuator if its circuit tests open internally.
- Repair a confirmed internal module connection fault after verifying the external wiring.
Can I keep driving?
You may be unable to change transfer-case range, so confirm the selected range before driving where range choice matters. Do not force repeated shift attempts, especially if the vehicle is in an unsuitable range for the terrain.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
