OBD-II fault code

C05F6: 4WD/AWD Range Actuator Control Circuit Performance

What it means

The control module monitors the 4WD/AWD range actuator’s response to shift commands. It sets this code when the actuator’s operation does not meet expected performance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The 4WD/AWD range actuator shifts the transfer case between high and low range where that reduction range is fitted. The control module monitors how the actuator responds to shift commands and sets this code when its operation does not meet expected performance, such as when movement is slow or incomplete.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator binding or mechanical wear
  2. Damaged wiring or poor connection
  3. Low or unstable system voltage
  4. Fault in the actuator control module

Symptoms

  • Unable to shift between high and low range
  • 4WD/AWD warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and 4WD/AWD live data for the requested range, actuator response, and any low-voltage conditions when the fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the range actuator wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, looseness, or poor contact.
  3. Check the vehicle's battery and charging condition and compare system voltage with the manufacturer's specification, since unstable voltage can impair actuator movement.
  4. Use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command a range shift and observe whether actuator feedback follows the command.
  5. If voltage and wiring are satisfactory, inspect the actuator and transfer-case mechanism for binding or wear, then check the control module if the mechanical parts pass.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a poor range actuator connector.
  • Repair damaged actuator wiring or restore a poor electrical connection.
  • Correct a battery or charging-system fault causing unstable system voltage.
  • Repair or replace a binding or worn range actuator or transfer-case mechanism.
  • Repair or replace the actuator control module only after the circuit and mechanism have been checked.

Can I keep driving?

The transfer case may not shift between high and low range, so avoid terrain or towing that requires a range change. Stop repeated attempts if shifting binds or makes unusual noises, since continued operation can worsen mechanical damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
