OBD-II fault code

C053C: Wheel Speed Sensor Generic Range/Performance

What it means

Generic wheel speed sensor reading implausible — does not specify which wheel. Wheel-speed signals feed ABS, ESC, traction control, transmission and odometer — a single dropped signal disables all of these safety functions until repaired.

How it works

Wheel-speed sensors and their encoders provide the ABS module with each wheel's rotational speed. C053C means the module has found an implausible wheel-speed signal but this code alone does not identify which wheel, so scan data and inspection are needed to locate it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wheel-speed sensor or encoder fault
  2. Incorrect sensor air gap or installation
  3. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and compare live wheel-speed readings while moving slowly to find a wheel that drops out or disagrees with the others.
  2. Inspect each wheel-speed sensor connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, impact damage, or chafing.
  3. Check the sensor mounting and air gap, and look for debris or damage at the sensor and encoder ring.
  4. Rotate the suspect wheel and watch its live speed signal for interruptions or erratic changes.
  5. Test the suspect sensor and circuit using the vehicle wiring diagram and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the sensor circuit checks out, inspect the encoder and wheel bearing for damage or incorrect installation.

Common fixes

  • Clean debris from the sensor or encoder area and secure a loose connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or corroded terminals at the affected wheel.
  • Correct sensor seating or air gap where the design allows adjustment.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty wheel-speed sensor or damaged encoder/bearing assembly.

Can I keep driving?

Basic braking generally remains, but ABS, traction control, and stability control may be unavailable or limited. Drive cautiously and avoid hard braking or slippery roads until the affected wheel-speed signal is restored.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
