OBD-II fault code

C053B: ABS Valves Supply Voltage Circuit/Open

What it means

The ABS module monitors the supply voltage circuit for the ABS valves and sets this code when it detects an open circuit.

How it works

The ABS valves are solenoid-operated valves in the hydraulic control unit that adjust brake pressure during ABS and stability interventions. The ABS module sets C053B when the valves' supply circuit is open and their electrical supply is unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply fuse blown
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • Traction or stability control warning light on
  • ABS functions may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Read ABS freeze-frame data and related valve or power-supply codes to identify when the open circuit was detected.
  2. Check the ABS valve supply fuse and its terminals for an open fuse, poor contact, or heat damage.
  3. Inspect the hydraulic control unit connector for a loose plug, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back in its cavity.
  4. Trace the valve supply wiring for breaks, chafing, or corrosion, especially near the hydraulic unit.
  5. With the wiring diagram, test supply-circuit continuity and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the external supply path is sound, check for an internal module or hydraulic-unit connection fault.

Common fixes

  • Replace a failed supply fuse after checking for the reason it opened.
  • Reseat the hydraulic unit connector or repair a backed-out or corroded terminal.
  • Repair damaged or open wiring in the ABS valve supply circuit.
  • Repair or replace the hydraulic control unit or module if an internal open is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Normal braking may remain, but ABS, traction control, or stability control can be limited because the valves may not operate. Drive cautiously, keep extra distance, and avoid conditions where ABS assistance is likely to be needed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
