OBD-II fault code

C0516: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Intermittent

What it means

The module detects an intermittent right-rear wheel-speed sensor signal. This indicates an unstable signal, but does not by itself identify the failed component.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The ABS module uses the right-rear wheel-speed sensor to monitor that wheel’s rotation. C0516 sets when the signal from that wheel cuts in and out or becomes unstable, so the code points to an intermittent signal rather than proving which part has failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose or corroded connector
  2. Damaged or chafed wiring
  3. Failing wheel-speed sensor
  4. Damaged tone ring or encoder

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and compare live right-rear speed with the other wheels to identify when the signal drops out.
  2. Inspect the right-rear connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.
  3. Examine the right-rear wiring along its route for chafing, stretching, or damage near moving suspension parts.
  4. Monitor the right-rear live signal while rotating the wheel and gently moving the harness to reproduce an intermittent dropout.
  5. Inspect the right-rear tone ring or encoder for damage or contamination, then test the sensor circuit to manufacturer specifications.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the right-rear sensor connector or repair its terminals.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring in the right-rear circuit.
  • Replace a failing right-rear wheel-speed sensor.
  • Repair or replace a damaged right-rear tone ring or encoder.

Can I keep driving?

ABS and stability control may work intermittently or be disabled, and brake assist may be reduced. Drive cautiously, avoid slippery roads, and leave extra stopping distance until the fault is fixed.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
