OBD-II fault code

C0514: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The module detects a right-rear wheel-speed sensor signal below the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault; the code alone does not establish that other vehicle functions are disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The ABS module monitors the electrical signal from the right-rear wheel-speed sensor as it reports wheel rotation. C0514 sets when that signal is lower than the module expects, which can happen if the signal wire is grounded or the sensor circuit is damaged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Damaged wiring or connector
  3. Faulty wheel-speed sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live right-rear wheel speed to confirm whether the signal is low or absent while the other wheels report normally.
  2. Inspect the right-rear sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, loose terminals, or damage.
  3. Trace the right-rear signal wiring for crushed insulation, chafing, or contact with ground, especially near the wheel and suspension.
  4. Test the right-rear circuit for a short to ground and check its wiring condition against the vehicle diagram and manufacturer’s specifications.
  5. If wiring checks pass, test the right-rear sensor and inspect its tone ring or encoder for damage.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the right-rear connector or repair damaged terminals.
  • Repair wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation in the right-rear circuit.
  • Replace a faulty right-rear wheel-speed sensor.
  • Repair or replace a damaged right-rear tone ring or encoder.

Can I keep driving?

The fault can disable ABS and stability functions, though it does not by itself prove that the basic brakes have failed. Drive cautiously with extra stopping distance and avoid slippery conditions until repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
