What it means
Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor - Mechanical: a mechanical fault is present — typically a damaged tone ring, excessive air gap, or loose mounting. Wheel-speed signals feed ABS, ESC, traction control and the speedometer.
How it works
The ABS module reads wheel rotation from the left-front wheel-speed sensor and checks that the sensor and tone ring produce a mechanically plausible signal. C0518 indicates a mechanical problem at that left-front sensing point, such as a damaged ring, excessive sensor gap, loose mounting, or hub movement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Damaged or worn tone ring
- Excessive sensor-to-ring air gap
- Loose or incorrect sensor mounting
- Wheel bearing or hub play affecting sensor gap
- Debris or damage interfering with the sensor and tone ring
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- Traction or stability control warning light on
- ABS or stability-control functions may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare left-front speed with the other wheels to see how the reading changes as the vehicle moves.
- Inspect the left-front sensor mounting and surrounding area for looseness, debris, or visible damage.
- Check the left-front tone ring or encoder for cracks, wear, contamination, or missing features.
- Check for left-front wheel bearing or hub play that could change the sensor-to-ring gap.
- Measure or assess the left-front sensor gap and test the signal using the manufacturer’s procedure and specifications.
Common fixes
- Remove debris interfering with the left-front sensor or encoder.
- Secure or correctly reseat the left-front sensor mounting.
- Replace a damaged left-front tone ring or encoder.
- Repair excessive left-front hub or bearing play.
- Replace the left-front wheel-speed sensor if it fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
ABS and stability functions may be reduced or disabled, although ordinary braking may remain available. Drive carefully, leave extra stopping room, and avoid slippery roads until the left-front mechanical fault is corrected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
