What it means
This code identifies a fault associated with the collapsible steering column deployment control. The restraint control module sets it when it detects a problem in that deployment control; the exact fault is specified by the accompanying subfault information.
How it works
The collapsible steering column deployment device is part of the vehicle’s crash restraint system, and the restraint control module monitors its deployment control circuit. B0005 indicates a fault in that circuit; the accompanying subfault information identifies the detected condition more precisely.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Steering column deployment circuit wiring fault
- Loose or corroded connector
- Faulty steering column deployment device
- Restraint control module fault
Symptoms
- Airbag warning light on
- Steering column deployment function may be unavailable in a crash
How to diagnose it
- Use an SRS-capable scan tool to retrieve B0005 subfault and freeze-frame data before clearing the code.
- Follow the manufacturer’s SRS safeing procedure, then inspect the steering column deployment device connectors and harness for looseness, corrosion, pin damage, or chafing.
- Check the deployment circuit for an open, short, or poor connection using the manufacturer’s specified SRS test procedure.
- If the harness and connectors pass, test the steering column deployment device and then the restraint control module according to the vehicle’s diagnostic procedure.
- After the confirmed fault is repaired, clear B0005 and rescan to verify it does not return.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair a loose or corroded connector in the steering column deployment circuit.
- Repair damaged steering column deployment wiring.
- Replace the steering column deployment device if it fails its specified test.
- Repair or replace the restraint control module if testing confirms it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
The warning light means the steering column’s crash deployment function may be unavailable, reducing protection in a collision. Minimize driving and arrange prompt SRS diagnosis; do not disturb the column device or its wiring without the manufacturer’s safeing procedure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
