OBD-II fault code

B0003: Driver Frontal Deployment Loop Resistance Low

What it means

The SRS module has detected that the resistance in the driver frontal airbag deployment loop is below the expected range, suggesting a short or partial short between the squib leads. The airbag warning lamp is illuminated.

How it works

The driver frontal airbag deployment loop carries the firing circuit monitored by the SRS module. B0003 indicates that measured loop resistance is lower than expected, consistent with a short or partial short in the driver airbag loop; it does not identify the exact location by itself.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shorted squib leads in clock spring or wiring
  2. Internal short within driver airbag module
  3. Connector corrosion bridging pins

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Read SRS freeze-frame and subfault data with a capable scan tool to see when the low-resistance fault was recorded.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s SRS safeing procedure, then inspect the driver airbag connectors, clock spring wiring, and related harness for pin bridging, corrosion, or chafing.
  3. Check for connector contamination or corrosion that could bridge the squib terminals, without probing the airbag igniter directly.
  4. Use only the manufacturer’s specified SRS test equipment and procedure to isolate the loop sections and locate the low-resistance path.
  5. If the clock spring and wiring test correctly, have the driver airbag module and SRS module evaluated using their specified procedures; clear the code and verify the repair.

Common fixes

  • Correct connector corrosion or contamination with approved SRS service methods; replace damaged terminals or connectors as specified.
  • Repair chafed or pinched wiring that is shorting the driver airbag loop.
  • Replace a faulty clock spring if its loop wiring is shorted.
  • Replace the driver airbag module if its internal squib circuit is confirmed shorted.
  • Replace the SRS module only if its fault is confirmed after circuit checks.

Can I keep driving?

The airbag warning light indicates the driver frontal airbag may not work as intended, so crash protection is reduced. Limit driving to what is necessary while arranging prompt repair, and do not handle or electrically test the airbag igniter outside the specified SRS procedure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
