MINI Clubman recalls

  1. Footwell control module may short circuit

    Corrosion from water and road salt may cause the driver's footwell electronic control module to short circuit, increasing fire risk. Dealers will inspect the sunroof drains, footwell and module, and replace certain components depending on the results.

    BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2008-2014 MINI Clubman Cooper, Clubman Cooper S, Clubman John Cooper Works, and 2007-2013 MINI Hardtop 2-Door Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. The electronic control module in the driver's side footwell area may short-circuit, due to corrosion from water and road salt.
    Consequence
    An electrical short-circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
    Remedy
    Dealers will inspect the sunroof drains, interior footwell area, and FRM and, depending upon the results of the inspection, certain components will be replaced. Owner notification letters were mailed May 13, 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

  2. Front seatbelt retractor may not work as specified

    A damaged micro gas generator in a front seatbelt retractor may not work as specified in a crash. The seatbelts will be checked and replaced if damaged.

    Defect
    The micro gas generator within the front seatbelt�s retractor may have been damaged and may not act according to the specification in the event of an accident.
    Remedy
    On the affected vehicles the front seatbelts will be checked and replaced if they are found to have been damaged.

  3. Passenger seat belt retractor may deactivate early

    The passenger seat belt's automatic locking retractor may deactivate before the webbing fully retracts. In a crash, a retractor that does not work as intended increases injury risk. Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors and replace them if necessary, free of charge.

As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
    Consequence
    During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury.
    Remedy
    Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021.   4. Rollover sensor may prevent safety systems from activating

    A problem with the rollover sensor may prevent the head air bag, seat belt pretensioners and other safety systems from activating in a rollover crash, increasing injury risk. Dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge.

    BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 X1 xDrive28i, X1 sDrive28i, X2 xDrive28i and X2 sDrive28i, 2020 MINI Clubman Cooper S All4, 2021 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper, Cooper S, John Cooper Works and Cooper S E) and MINI Hardtop 4 Door (Cooper and Cooper S) vehicles. Due to a problem with the rollover sensor within the air bag control unit, in the event of a rollover crash, the head air bag, seat belt pretensioners and other safety systems, may not activate.
    Consequence
    If the safety systems do not deploy as intended in a roll over crash, it may increase the risk of injury.
    Remedy
    BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge. The recall began July 17, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.

  5. Crankshaft sensor may cause engine stall

    Incorrect sensor firmware may prevent the crankshaft sensor from processing input properly, causing the vehicle to stall and increasing crash risk. Dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor, free of charge.

The crankshaft sensor may be equipped with incorrect firmware, preventing the sensor from properly processing input from the crankshaft reluctor ring, possibly resulting in a vehicle stall.   6. Auxiliary water pump may overheat

    The electric auxiliary water pump may fail and overheat its circuit board, increasing the risk of fire. Dealers will replace the pump, free of charge.

The electric auxiliary water pump may fail and cause the circuit board to overheat.
    Consequence
    If the circuit board were to overheat, it can increase the risk of a fire.
    Remedy
    BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric auxiliary water pump, free of charge. Depending on the model, there are currently limited parts available, however not all parts are available at this time. Owners will be notified of the recall beginning June 11, 2018, and will receive a second notification when remedy parts become available.   7. Seat-mounted side air bag may not deploy

    The initiator in a seat-mounted side air bag may fail to ignite during a crash, preventing deployment and increasing injury risk. Dealers will replace the air bag modules free of charge.

  8. Front curtain airbags may not deploy as intended

    The front side curtain airbags may not deploy in the intended positions during a crash, increasing injury risk. Dealers will modify the driver and passenger airbag covers, free of charge.

    BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 MINI Clubman vehicles manufactured August 19, 2015, through July 14, 2016. The side curtain air bags for the front seat occupants may deploy in the intended positions in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."
    Consequence
    If a side curtain air bag does not inflate as intended in the event of a crash, there is an increased risk of injury to the front seat occupants.
    Remedy
    BMW will notify owners, and dealers will modify the driver and passenger side curtain air bag covers, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin September 12, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

  9. Turbocharger water pump circuit board may overheat

  10. ABS warning symbol may not identify a fault

    The brake system symbol may illuminate without the ABS letters during an ABS problem, so the driver may not know there is a fault, increasing crash risk. All affected vehicles have been repaired at dealerships.

    Defect
    BMW Is recalling certain model year 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman and Cooper S Clubman vehicles manufactured from February 8, 2011, through May 11, 2011, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard No. 101, "Controls and Displays." These vehicles are equipped with a European specification tachometer that uses brake-system telltales/symbols that do not meet U.S. requirements.
    Consequence
    In the event of an ABS system problem, only the the outer circle of the symbol illuminates, not the ABS letters. As such, the driver may be unaware that there is a problem with the ABS, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy
    All affected vehicles have been repaired at dealerships. Therefore, an owner notification letter will not be issued for this campaign. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
