Who is Alpina?

Alpina is a German marque from Buchloe, Bavaria, known for developing refined, high-performance cars based on BMW models. Its cars paired extra performance with comfort and understated details. BMW acquired the Alpina brand rights, bringing the marque into its portfolio.

The model names reflect the range’s petrol and diesel offerings: B models used petrol engines, while D models used diesel. The line-up included saloons, coupés, a roadster and the XD3 SUV, giving the marque a focused selection of BMW-based cars.

Alpina model lines and years

The model years span 2003 to 2025 and include ten lines. The Roadster V8 appears for 2003, followed by the B7 from 2007 to 2018. The B3, B5 and D3 all began in 2010; the B3 continued through 2025, while the B5 and D3 ran through 2021.

The range expanded in 2012 with the B6 and D5, then added the B4, D4 and XD3 in 2015. The B3 was the longest-running line listed. Across the range, Alpina offered different BMW-based body styles and petrol and diesel power.

How did the range develop?

Alpina built its range around established model families and added alternatives with different body styles and engines. The Roadster V8 appears in 2003, followed by the B and D lines. The XD3 brought an SUV to the line-up, while the B4 and D4 added coupés.

The B3, B5 and D3 were among the longer-running lines. In official EU registration figures, the D3 leads with 1,848 registrations from 2010 to 2021, followed by the B5 with 1,665 over the same period. The B3 recorded 994 from 2010 to 2025.

Markets and electrification

Alpina’s figures include European Union registrations and US EPA data. European fuel consumption and emissions tests use WLTP or, for older cars, NEDC; the EPA uses its own procedure, so results from the two markets are not directly comparable.

The listed range consists of petrol B models and diesel D models, including the XD3.
