What it means
Fault on the ignition START output — module cannot drive the starter solenoid via this line. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The ignition START output signals the starting system to energize the starter solenoid. The control module monitors the START output and its reported state; this code sets when the start command cannot be delivered or its status is faulty.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring or starter relay fault
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication and starting-system codes, and note whether the fault occurred during a no-crank event.
- Check freeze-frame and live data for start request and START-output status while attempting to start.
- Inspect the START-output wiring, connectors, fuse, and starter relay for damage, corrosion, or a loose connection.
- Check for the start command at the relay and solenoid, following the wiring diagram and comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the output circuit is sound, check gateway message routing and CAN network termination against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded START-output connection.
- Replace a faulty starter relay or fuse after checking for an underlying short or overload.
- Repair damaged wiring between the ignition output, relay, and starter solenoid.
- Correct a confirmed gateway routing or CAN termination fault.
Can I keep driving?
A faulty START output can leave you unable to restart the vehicle, even if it is currently running. Avoid shutting the engine off until you are somewhere safe, and arrange diagnosis promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
