OBD-II fault code

U3031: Ignition Output Off

What it means

Fault on the ignition OFF output. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The ignition OFF output reports or controls the vehicle's transition to the off state, allowing powered systems to shut down. The control module monitors this output and its communication; this code sets when the OFF signal or its reported status is faulty or unavailable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring or relay fault
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and check whether modules remain awake or report an ignition-state fault.
  2. Review freeze-frame and live data for the reported ignition state and OFF-output status during shutdown.
  3. Inspect the OFF-output wiring, connectors, fuse, and relay for damage, corrosion, or a poor connection.
  4. Check that the output changes to the off state when the ignition is switched off, using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit tests correctly, check gateway routing and CAN network termination for communication errors.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged OFF-output connection.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty relay or fuse after checking the circuit for overload.
  • Repair damaged OFF-output wiring.
  • Correct confirmed gateway routing or CAN termination problems.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives normally, a short trip may be possible, but a failed OFF output can keep modules powered and drain the battery or prevent systems from shutting down. Park somewhere safe and avoid leaving the vehicle unattended for long.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
