What it means
Disable line A voltage above expected range. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The disable line carries the gateway's request for Control Module A to enter a safe state. This code means the line voltage is higher than expected, which can happen when the wire is shorted to battery voltage and can prevent the module from interpreting the request correctly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to battery
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Record all module codes and freeze-frame details, especially other high-voltage or communication faults recorded at the same time.
- Use a scan tool to confirm whether Control Module A responds and compare its reported disable state with the gateway command.
- Inspect the disable-line harness for damaged insulation, pinched sections, or contact with a powered wire.
- Following the manufacturer's isolation procedure, test the line for a short to battery voltage and measure it against the specified range.
- If the circuit is intact, check gateway routing and CAN termination according to the manufacturer's network procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring or connector damage that lets battery voltage reach the disable line.
- Reroute and secure the repaired harness away from powered circuits.
- Correct a confirmed gateway routing or configuration fault.
- Repair a CAN termination fault if testing shows it is outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the fault has caused a module shutdown, limp mode, or unreliable essential functions. If the vehicle behaves normally, keep any necessary trip short because dependent systems may lose Control Module A data.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
