OBD-II fault code

U3016: Control Module Ground D

What it means

Fault on the fourth ground reference of the module. A communication loss with this module breaks any function relying on its data — diagnostic tools may show 'no response' and dependent modules can fall into limp mode.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Ground D is the module's fourth ground reference and completes the return path for circuits assigned to that ground. U3016 sets when the module detects a fault on this path, which may cause unstable operation or communication loss.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Ground stud corroded
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules for ground and communication faults, and save freeze-frame data to identify when the ground D fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the ground D wire, connector, and ground stud for corrosion, a loose fastener, heat damage, or a broken wire.
  3. Check for changes in module status or resets while gently moving the ground D harness.
  4. Measure voltage drop across the ground D connection with the module operating and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If ground D is sound, inspect the module connector and check whether a separate gateway or CAN network fault explains remaining communication symptoms.

Common fixes

  • Clean and tighten the ground D terminal and mounting point.
  • Repair a corroded, broken, or heat-damaged ground D wire or terminal.
  • Replace a damaged ground stud or connector terminal.
  • Correct a confirmed gateway or CAN fault if the ground D path passes its tests.

Can I keep driving?

Intermittent loss of ground D can disrupt the module without warning, so avoid driving if the affected module controls a safety or powertrain function. Stop safely if critical warnings, stalling, or limp mode occur.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
