OBD-II fault code

U3008: Control Module Ground A

What it means

A control module monitors its designated Ground A circuit for an electrical condition outside the expected range. It sets this code when that ground fault is detected; the exact monitoring criteria depend on the module.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

A control module relies on its Ground A connection as one of its electrical return paths. U3008 sets when the module detects an electrical condition on that specific ground outside its expected range, which can disrupt the module’s operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Ground stud corroded
  2. Ground connection loose
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame or event data to identify which module reports Ground A trouble and whether other modules have matching voltage or communication codes.
  2. Locate the named module’s Ground A point using vehicle service information, then inspect the ground stud and cable for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  3. Check the Ground A connection for voltage drop under load and compare the result with the manufacturer’s specification.
  4. Inspect the Ground A wire and connector between the module and ground point for breaks, poor crimps, or contamination.
  5. If the ground circuit tests correctly but communication codes persist, check gateway message routing and related network data using the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the corroded or loose Ground A stud and connection.
  • Repair a damaged Ground A wire, terminal, or connector.
  • Repair the gateway fault if diagnostics confirm incorrect CAN message routing.

Can I keep driving?

If the affected module controls a safety or essential driving function, avoid driving until that function is confirmed to work; stop if warning lights, shutdown, or limp mode occur. A poor ground can cause intermittent module operation and disable dependent functions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
