What it means
The control module's internal timer or clock has drifted or stopped — affects time-stamped diagnostic events, scheduled tasks and security challenges.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The control module uses an internal timer or clock to track intervals and time-stamp events. U3017 sets when that timer or clock drifts or stops beyond the module's expected performance, which can affect scheduled tasks, event records, or security checks.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Internal oscillator drifted
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
- CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan the reporting module and related modules, and save freeze-frame data to see whether the code coincides with resets or communication faults.
- Check live data or diagnostic records for clock values, timestamps, or events that are missing, frozen, or out of sequence.
- Inspect the module's power, ground, and connector condition, since unstable supply can cause clock resets that resemble an internal fault.
- Verify that module communication and gateway routing are stable while checking for repeated clock or timer errors.
- If power, ground, and communication are sound, follow the manufacturer's checks for an internal timer or module fault.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair a loose module power or ground connection causing resets.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals affecting the module supply.
- Correct a confirmed gateway communication routing fault.
- Repair or replace the control module if its timer or clock continues to fail with stable power and communication.
Can I keep driving?
The fault may affect time-based functions or security checks even if the vehicle seems normal. Driving is generally reasonable if no safety or powertrain functions are impaired, but stop if the module's failure causes critical warnings or abnormal operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
