What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the remote function actuation module (key fob receiver / RKE). Button/event values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
The remote function actuation module receives key-fob button events and communicates them to other vehicle modules. U0515 sets when a receiving module judges those event values implausible and rejects them.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data and related communication codes to identify the receiver that rejected the remote-function data.
- Use live data while pressing each key-fob button and compare the reported events with the button presses.
- Check whether the problem affects one fob or all fobs, then inspect the fob battery and remote-function module connectors and wiring.
- Check for recent remote-function module replacement or software updates and verify configuration compatibility.
- Have a technician inspect network communication and gateway routing to the remote function actuation module.
Common fixes
- Replace a weak key-fob battery or repair a damaged fob, if event data points to the fob.
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged wiring at the remote function actuation module.
- Correct module configuration or software compatibility after replacement.
- Repair or replace the remote function actuation module if its event data remains invalid.
- Repair gateway routing or network faults identified in testing.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle starts and operates normally, driving is usually unaffected, but remote locking or other key-fob functions may fail. Confirm you can secure the vehicle and use the key or manual entry method if needed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
