OBD-II fault code

U0488: Invalid Data Received From Digital Disc Player/Changer Module A

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from digital disc player/changer module A (CD/DVD/BD). Track, slot or fault status values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Digital disc player/changer module A reads or manages disc playback and reports track, slot, and fault status over the vehicle network. U0488 sets when a receiving module finds those messages from module A implausible and rejects them.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame details, noting which module stored U0488 and any disc player or infotainment communication codes.
  2. Check whether module A’s disc playback, track display, or slot selection works consistently, and note whether a recent replacement or software change preceded the fault.
  3. Inspect module A’s connector and accessible network wiring for loose plugs, corrosion, damage, or moisture.
  4. Check the module’s power and ground according to the manufacturer’s procedure before suspecting the player itself.
  5. Use a vehicle-capable scan tool to review module A’s reported track, slot, and fault status and check whether software or configuration matches the vehicle.
  6. If wiring and supply are sound, follow the manufacturer’s network diagnostic procedure to determine whether module A or the gateway is the source of invalid data.

Common fixes

  • Secure or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged module A connector or network wire.
  • Repair module A’s power or ground connection.
  • Correct software or configuration after replacing the disc player or related module.
  • Replace module A or repair the gateway when testing confirms the failing source.

Can I keep driving?

If the problem is confined to disc playback, driving is generally unaffected; avoid relying on the changer’s display or controls while they malfunction. Address any warnings or failures in other vehicle systems separately and promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
