OBD-II fault code

U0489: Invalid Data Received From Digital Disc Player/Changer Module B

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from digital disc player/changer module B (CD/DVD/BD). Track, slot or fault status values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

Digital disc player/changer module B manages disc playback and sends track, slot, and fault status to other modules over the vehicle network. U0489 sets when a receiving module rejects module B’s data as implausible; it identifies the B unit rather than module A.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame details, confirming which module stored U0489 and checking for related disc player, infotainment, or network codes.
  2. Test module B’s disc playback, track display, and slot selection separately from other audio units to see whether its functions are the ones affected.
  3. Inspect module B’s connector and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
  4. Check module B’s power and ground using the manufacturer’s procedure, since a supply problem can corrupt or interrupt its status messages.
  5. Review module B’s track, slot, and fault status with a vehicle-capable scan tool and check for a software or configuration mismatch after replacement.
  6. If its wiring and supply are sound, use the manufacturer’s network tests to distinguish a module B fault from incorrect gateway routing.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or damaged module B connector or network wire.
  • Repair a poor power or ground connection at module B.
  • Update or configure module B and related infotainment modules after replacement.
  • Replace module B or repair the gateway only when testing confirms the source of the invalid data.

Can I keep driving?

When only module B’s disc functions are affected, driving is generally unaffected. If other systems also display warnings or stop working, address those faults promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
