What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the antenna control module (active antenna amplifier / diversity controller). RF signal-quality flags fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
How it works
The antenna control module manages an active antenna amplifier or diversity system and reports reception-related status over the vehicle network. U0486 is set when another module receives RF signal-quality or related status data from that antenna controller that fails its plausibility checks.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules, save freeze-frame information, and check for antenna, radio, and network codes that could identify which module rejected the data.
- Check radio reception across different stations and bands, and note whether the problem affects all sources or only antenna-dependent reception.
- Inspect the antenna control module’s connectors, antenna leads, and accessible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, water entry, or damage.
- Check the antenna module’s power and ground as specified by the manufacturer, especially if reception problems occur intermittently.
- Compare antenna status data reported by the controller and receiving module with a vehicle-capable scan tool, and check for software or configuration mismatches after recent repairs.
- If the supply and wiring are sound, use the manufacturer’s network diagnostic procedure to isolate a faulty antenna controller or gateway routing issue.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged antenna or network connection.
- Repair the antenna control module’s power or ground fault.
- Update or configure replaced radio or antenna modules to the correct vehicle software.
- Replace the antenna control module or repair the gateway only when testing confirms the source of the invalid data.
Can I keep driving?
If the fault only affects radio reception, normal driving is generally unaffected. If other modules show warnings or stop working, address those symptoms promptly and do not assume they are caused only by the antenna.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
