What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the rear differential control module (electronic LSD or torque vectoring). Clutch/torque command vs. actual values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The rear differential control module manages an electronic limited-slip differential or torque-vectoring function at the rear axle. Other modules check its reported clutch or torque command and actual response; U0437 sets when a receiving module rejects the rear differential data as implausible. A controller, input, software, or network fault can limit rear axle torque distribution.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save U0437, differential or AWD codes, and freeze-frame data to identify the rejecting module and operating conditions.
- Read rear differential command and actual-response data to check for missing, implausible, or inconsistent clutch or torque values.
- Inspect the rear differential controller, actuator and sensor connectors, grounds, and CAN wiring for damage, leaks where applicable, or corrosion.
- Check for recent differential or module work and verify the rear differential module software and configuration are compatible.
- Test actuator circuits and CAN communication to the manufacturer's specification before deciding whether the module or differential hardware has failed.
Common fixes
- Secure or clean a loose or corroded rear differential controller connection.
- Repair damaged actuator, sensor, ground, or CAN wiring.
- Correct incompatible software or configuration in the rear differential control module.
- Repair a confirmed gateway or network fault.
- Repair the rear differential actuator or replace its module only when testing isolates the fault.
Can I keep driving?
Rear torque-vectoring or limited-slip operation may be reduced or unavailable, affecting traction and handling. Drive gently, especially on slippery roads, and stop if you hear differential noises or feel binding.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
