OBD-II fault code

U0439: Invalid Data Received From All Terrain Control Module

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the all-terrain (drive mode) control module. Selected mode, throttle map or stability target values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

How it works

The all-terrain control module reports the selected drive mode and related throttle or stability targets to other vehicle systems. U0439 sets when a receiving module rejects those mode or target messages as implausible. A module fault, software mismatch, or incorrect network routing can prevent the selected terrain mode from being applied as intended.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save U0439, drive-mode and stability codes, and freeze-frame data to identify which module rejected the all-terrain messages.
  2. Compare the selected mode shown by the driver controls with live mode, throttle-target, and stability-target data.
  3. Inspect the all-terrain module controls, connectors, grounds, gateway connections, and CAN wiring for damage or poor contact.
  4. Check for recent module replacement or software updates and verify compatibility and configuration.
  5. Test CAN communication and gateway routing to the manufacturer's specification, then investigate the all-terrain module if the network checks pass.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose all-terrain module or gateway connector.
  • Repair damaged CAN wiring or a poor module ground.
  • Correct software or configuration incompatibility affecting the selected drive mode.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway routing or network termination fault.
  • Replace the all-terrain control module only after its power, ground, software, and network have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

The selected terrain or drive mode may not take effect, while basic driving may remain normal. Use a familiar mode, drive cautiously on difficult surfaces, and avoid relying on the all-terrain settings until repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
