OBD-II fault code

U0435: Invalid Data Received From Power Steering Control Module — Rear

What it means

A receiving module detected implausible data from the rear power steering control module (rear-wheel steering). Steer angle command vs. actual values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The rear power steering control module manages rear-wheel steering and reports steering commands and measured rear steering angle to other modules. U0435 sets when a receiving module rejects that rear steering data as implausible. A module or sensor fault, incompatible software, or a network routing problem can leave rear-wheel steering disabled or limited.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module internal fault or sensor input drift
  2. Software version mismatch after replacement
  3. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save U0435, steering codes, and freeze-frame data to determine which module rejected the rear steering messages.
  2. Read rear steering command and actual angle data with a scan tool, checking for missing, stuck, or inconsistent values.
  3. Inspect the rear steering actuator, angle-sensing components, connectors, grounds, and CAN wiring for damage or loose connections.
  4. Check whether the rear steering module or related parts were replaced, and verify software compatibility and configuration.
  5. Test rear steering power, ground, signal circuits, and CAN communication to the manufacturer's specification before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or corroded rear steering connector or ground.
  • Repair damaged wiring to the rear steering module or actuator.
  • Correct incompatible software or configuration following a module replacement.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway or CAN network fault.
  • Replace or calibrate a rear steering sensor, actuator, or module only after testing identifies it as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Rear-wheel steering may be unavailable, changing how the vehicle turns and tracks. Drive slowly and avoid sharp maneuvers; stop if steering feels abnormal or a steering warning indicates the vehicle is unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
