What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the active roll control module (active anti-roll bars). Hydraulic/electric actuator command vs. actual values fail plausibility checks and are rejected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The active roll control module operates actuators that resist body roll through active anti-roll bars. Other modules monitor its reported commands and actual actuator response; U0434 sets when a receiving module rejects those values as implausible. A module fault, software mismatch, or network routing problem can disable or limit active roll control.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save U0434, suspension or chassis codes, and freeze-frame data to identify which module rejected the roll-control messages.
- Compare active roll-control command and actual-response data in a scan tool, noting missing or inconsistent actuator or position readings.
- Inspect the active anti-roll bar actuators, module connectors, grounds, and CAN wiring for damage, leaks where applicable, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Check module replacement or software history and verify the active roll-control module configuration is compatible with the vehicle.
- Test actuator circuits and CAN communication to the manufacturer's specification, then check gateway routing if wiring and actuator circuits pass.
Common fixes
- Secure or clean a loose or corroded active roll-control connector.
- Repair damaged actuator wiring, CAN wiring, or a poor module ground.
- Correct module software or configuration incompatibility.
- Repair a confirmed gateway or network fault.
- Repair or replace the active roll-control actuator or module only when tests isolate it as faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Active roll control may be disabled and handling can differ, especially during cornering or sudden maneuvers. Reduce speed, avoid abrupt steering, and stop driving if the vehicle feels unstable or shows a suspension warning requiring a stop.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
