OBD-II fault code

U040F: Invalid Data Received From Reductant Control Module

What it means

A control module received data from the Reductant Control Module that it judged invalid or implausible. This code identifies the rejected data, but does not by itself identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reductant control module manages and reports information for the exhaust-fluid dosing system used on many diesel vehicles. U040F sets when another module rejects data from the reductant control module as implausible; it does not by itself show that the fluid level or dosing hardware is the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fault or implausible input at the sending module
  2. Damaged or loose network wiring or connector
  3. Module power, ground, or programming issue

Symptoms

  • Warning message or warning lights
  • Reductant dosing or related functions may be limited
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify the receiving module and any reductant, dosing, emissions, or network codes logged with U040F.
  2. Check live data for reductant level, dosing status, and related reported values, looking for missing or implausible readings.
  3. Inspect the reductant control module connector and visible network wiring for corrosion, loose pins, fluid contamination, or damage.
  4. Check module power and ground and test relevant sensor and dosing circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Inspect the reductant tank, lines, and dosing components for leaks, damage, or crystallized deposits if companion codes indicate a dosing fault.
  6. If wiring and inputs are sound, verify module software and configuration and investigate network faults using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or corroded reductant module connector or network wiring.
  • Repair a failed power, ground, sensor, or dosing circuit identified by testing.
  • Clean or repair reductant lines or dosing hardware if inspection confirms deposits or damage.
  • Correct reductant module software or configuration incompatibility.
  • Replace the reductant control module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may continue to run, but emissions control can be impaired and some vehicles impose power limits or a restart restriction if the fault persists. Check for a countdown or start limitation message and avoid delaying diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
