What it means
A receiving module detected implausible data from the A/C control module. Compressor enable, blower or refrigerant pressure values fail plausibility checks against other inputs and are rejected.
How it works
The A/C control module reports information such as compressor requests, blower status, and refrigerant pressure over the vehicle network. U040A sets when another module judges one or more of those A/C messages implausible and rejects them, which can interrupt climate-control coordination.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module internal fault or sensor input drift
- Software version mismatch after replacement
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to find the receiving module and any A/C, pressure-sensor, or network codes logged with U040A.
- Check whether the compressor, blower, or climate-control functions are affected and note any warning messages.
- Inspect the A/C control module connectors and visible network wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or water entry.
- Review live data for compressor enable, blower status, and refrigerant pressure, comparing readings with related inputs for implausible or inconsistent values.
- Check the A/C module's power and ground and test relevant sensor circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
- If circuit checks pass, verify that the A/C module software and configuration match the vehicle and check gateway message routing using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged A/C module connector or network wire.
- Repair a faulty A/C sensor circuit if live data confirms an incorrect input.
- Correct A/C module configuration or software compatibility after a replacement.
- Replace the A/C control module or gateway only if testing confirms its fault.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle drives normally, the fault is generally a climate-control concern, but the A/C or blower may be limited or unavailable. Stop safely if loss of defrosting prevents a clear windscreen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
