OBD-II fault code

U0409: Invalid Data Received from Vehicle Security Control Module

What it means

A control module has received data from the vehicle security control module that it considers invalid or implausible. Security-related functions may be affected; the specific effects depend on the vehicle.

How it works

The vehicle security control module sends status and authorization data over the vehicle network to other modules. U0409 sets when a receiving module rejects that data as implausible or incorrectly formatted; it does not identify which security function or data value failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Implausible or incorrect security control module data
  2. Software or configuration incompatibility
  3. Intermittent network data corruption

Symptoms

  • Security-related functions may be limited or unavailable
  • Related warning indicators may illuminate
  • A diagnostic scan may show related communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify which module logged U0409 and whether security or network codes appeared at the same time.
  2. Check whether security-related functions are actually affected and note any warning messages, since symptoms can help identify which reported status is suspect.
  3. Inspect the vehicle security control module connectors and visible network wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or signs of water entry.
  4. Check the security module's power and ground connections against the manufacturer's specification, especially if other faults suggest an intermittent supply.
  5. Use a capable scan tool to compare available security module data with related module status and look for implausible or missing values.
  6. If wiring and power are sound, verify module configuration and software compatibility and investigate network data faults using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged security module connector or network wire.
  • Repair a faulty power or ground connection to the security control module.
  • Correct module configuration or software incompatibility using the vehicle's approved procedure.
  • Replace the security control module only if testing confirms an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle starts and drives normally, a short trip may be possible, but security or starting functions could be unreliable. Do not rely on remote locking or theft protection until the fault is resolved.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
