What it means
A control module has received data from the vehicle immobilizer control module that it considers invalid or implausible. Starting or authorization behavior may be affected; the specific effects depend on the vehicle.
How it works
The immobilizer control module checks key authorization and communicates the result to other modules that permit engine starting or operation. U0408 is set when a receiving module rejects the immobilizer's authorization or status data as implausible or incompatible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Implausible or incorrect immobilizer data
- Software or configuration incompatibility
- Intermittent network data corruption
Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and save freeze-frame data to identify which module logged U0408 and any key, immobilizer, or communication codes.
- Check whether the fault occurs with one key or all keys, and note any no-start or security indicator behavior.
- Inspect the immobilizer module connectors, grounds, and network wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Check module power and network communication, looking for related faults that could interrupt authorization messages.
- If electrical checks pass, verify that the immobilizer and related modules have compatible software and vehicle-specific key configuration.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged immobilizer module connector, ground, or network wire.
- Correct incompatible module configuration or software using the vehicle's approved procedure.
- Repair or replace a faulty key or immobilizer component when diagnostic evidence identifies it.
- Replace an incorrectly specified module and perform the required vehicle-specific configuration.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may fail to start or may not accept key authorization, potentially leaving you stranded. If it starts and runs normally, avoid switching it off in an unsafe location until the fault is diagnosed; do not bypass the immobilizer.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
