What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the rear camera module. The code identifies the communication loss; camera functions may be affected if equipped.
How it works
The rear camera module sends video-system status and related messages to the vehicle network so the display system can provide the rear-camera view. U0264 sets when another module stops receiving expected messages from the rear camera module; it can indicate a communication fault even if the camera lens or display appears intact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Bus wiring open or shorted
- Module without power or ground
- Module failed
Symptoms
- Rear camera functions may be unavailable
- A warning may appear depending on the vehicle
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and check whether U0264 is current, noting related display, parking-assist, network, or low-voltage codes.
- With the vehicle safely stationary, check whether the rear-camera image is missing and whether the camera module responds to a scan tool.
- Inspect the rear camera module's connector and accessible wiring for water entry, corrosion, impact damage, or a loose connection.
- Check the module's power and ground circuits according to the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If supplies are correct, test the bus wiring to the rear camera module for an open or short before replacing the module.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a poor connection at the rear camera module.
- Repair damaged or water-affected wiring to the module.
- Restore a failed power or ground supply.
- Replace and configure the rear camera module if its circuits test correctly but it does not communicate.
Can I keep driving?
If the rear camera view is unavailable, use mirrors and look around carefully when reversing; do not rely on the camera or its parking guidance. The communication fault usually does not affect normal forward driving.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
