OBD-II fault code

U0263: Lost Communication With Speech Recognition Module

What it means

A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the speech recognition module. The code identifies the communication loss; voice-recognition functions may be affected if equipped.

How it works

The speech recognition module processes voice input and exchanges status or command messages with the vehicle's infotainment system. U0263 sets when another module stops receiving expected messages from that speech recognition module, so voice-command functions may be unavailable even while manual controls still work.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Bus wiring open or shorted
  2. Module without power or ground
  3. Module failed

Symptoms

  • Speech-recognition functions may be unavailable
  • A warning may appear depending on the vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the infotainment and other modules for current communication codes, and record whether U0263 appeared with low-voltage or broader network faults.
  2. Check whether voice recognition alone is unavailable or whether the wider infotainment system also fails, to help distinguish a module link problem from a system-wide issue.
  3. Inspect the speech recognition module's connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, liquid exposure, or damage.
  4. Check the module's power and ground circuits using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If power and ground are correct, test the network wiring to the speech recognition module for an open or short before considering replacement.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a poor module connector.
  • Repair damaged bus wiring to the speech recognition module.
  • Restore a failed power or ground supply.
  • Replace and configure the module if it remains offline with correct supplies and network wiring.

Can I keep driving?

The fault generally disables voice recognition rather than affecting vehicle control. Drive normally if there are no other warnings, and use manual controls only when it is safe to do so.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
