What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the cruise control front distance range sensor. The code identifies a communication loss; it does not determine which cruise or collision-warning functions remain available.
At a glance
- Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication
How it works
The cruise control front distance range sensor detects vehicles ahead and provides distance information used by adaptive cruise control and potentially related warnings. U0235 sets when a control module stops receiving the sensor's expected messages; it does not show whether the sensor, its supply, or its network connection caused the loss.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loss of power or ground to the sensor
- Open, shorted, or damaged network wiring or connector
- Failed sensor
Symptoms
- Adaptive cruise or related distance-sensing functions may be unavailable
- A communication fault or warning may appear depending on the vehicle
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication codes and freeze-frame details, noting whether adaptive cruise or other driver-assistance modules also report faults.
- Check the dashboard for warnings and confirm whether adaptive cruise or distance-related features are unavailable; do not test them in traffic.
- Inspect the front distance sensor's exposed area, mounting, connector, and harness for obstruction, impact damage, corrosion, or looseness.
- Check the sensor's power and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the sensor network wiring for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If the sensor's supply and network circuits are sound, verify its communication with a capable scan tool before considering sensor replacement.
Common fixes
- Clear debris or correct an obstruction at the front sensor area if present.
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or network connections at the sensor.
- Restore a failed sensor power or ground connection.
- Replace the front distance range sensor if its circuits test correctly but it remains offline.
Can I keep driving?
Basic driving may be possible, but assume adaptive cruise and distance-sensing assistance are unavailable; use manual speed and following-distance control. Avoid relying on collision or distance warnings until the sensor communication fault is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
