OBD-II fault code

U0206: Lost Communication With Folding Top Control Module

What it means

A control module monitors network messages from the Folding Top Control Module. It sets this code when the expected communication is missing or invalid for a calibrated period.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the warning light of the system that lost communication

How it works

The Folding Top Control Module manages or reports folding-top operation, with its exact functions depending on the vehicle. U0206 is set when another module fails to receive valid expected messages from the folding-top module for the calibrated period; it does not by itself prove a mechanical top fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module unpowered
  2. Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
  3. CAN terminating resistor (120 Ω) drifted out of spec

Symptoms

  • Multiple warning lights may illuminate
  • Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
  • Specific functions inoperative depending on module
  • Diagnostic tools may show communication faults

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame information and scan all modules, noting whether U0206 appears with other network codes or only when folding-top functions are requested.
  2. Use a capable scan tool to check whether the Folding Top Control Module responds and whether related modules receive its messages.
  3. Inspect the module’s connector, harness, and grounds using vehicle-specific location information, paying attention to moisture or damage around the roof area.
  4. Test the module’s power and ground circuits under the manufacturer’s specified conditions before evaluating the network.
  5. If supplies are correct, test the CAN wiring and termination to specification and examine gateway routing when other modules also lose communication.

Common fixes

  • Repair a wet, damaged, loose, or corroded folding-top module connector or harness.
  • Restore a failed power feed or ground to the Folding Top Control Module.
  • Repair a CAN wiring or termination fault confirmed by testing.
  • Correct a gateway routing issue if broader communication faults point to it.

Can I keep driving?

The folding top may be unavailable or stop responding, so do not operate it while driving and make sure it is secured before setting off. If the top is stuck open, exposed occupants or unsecured panels can make driving unsafe; arrange a safe way to secure it.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
