What it means
The reporting module has lost communication with the front lighting control module. It sets this code when expected messages from that module are not received for a specified time.
How it works
The front lighting control module manages or coordinates front lighting functions, which can include lamps and related features depending on the vehicle. U0182 is stored when the reporting module stops receiving the expected network messages from that front module for the specified time. It indicates lost communication, not which front-light function or component caused it.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Lighting module power or ground fault
- Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
- CAN bus short or open circuit
- Front lighting module failure
- Low battery voltage
Symptoms
- Front lights or lighting features malfunction
- Warning lights or messages
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data and communication codes to determine whether the fault is limited to the front lighting module or follows a broader low-voltage or network event.
- Check the operation of the front lamps and any lighting warnings or messages to identify which functions are affected.
- Inspect the front lighting module's connectors and nearby wiring for corrosion, water, impact damage, or loose terminals.
- Verify the module's power and ground under the manufacturer's specified conditions.
- Test the CAN wiring and bus at the front module for opens, shorts, or communication faults using the wiring diagram and manufacturer specifications.
- If wiring and supplies are sound, check gateway routing and evaluate the front lighting module with vehicle-specific diagnostics.
Common fixes
- Restore battery charge or repair a charging fault if low voltage is present.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose front lighting module connectors.
- Repair damaged power, ground, or CAN wiring to the front module.
- Repair a confirmed CAN bus or gateway routing fault.
- Replace and configure the front lighting control module only after its power, ground, and network have passed testing.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if all required front lights work, but a communication fault can disable lighting features or leave lamps in an unsafe state. Check low and high beams, indicators, and other required front lights before driving, especially at night or in poor visibility.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
