What it means
A control module is not receiving expected messages from the Radio. Radio functions may be unavailable; the code alone does not identify why communication was lost.
How it works
The radio is an in-vehicle audio and information unit that may also exchange status messages with other modules over the vehicle network. U0184 is stored when the reporting module no longer receives the radio's expected messages for the specified time. A radio that is unpowered, a broken CAN connection, or incorrect gateway routing can all interrupt those messages.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Radio unpowered
- CAN wiring to radio broken
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly
Symptoms
- Radio functions may be unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and review freeze-frame and communication codes to see whether the radio alone is missing or several modules lost communication together.
- Check whether the radio powers up and whether its display or functions show an error.
- Inspect the radio connector and accessible CAN wiring for a loose fit, corrosion, or damage, and check for signs that the unit was recently removed.
- Verify radio power and ground against the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's test specifications.
- Test the CAN connection at the radio and check gateway routing if the radio has power and ground but remains unreachable.
- If the supply and network pass, assess the radio itself using vehicle-specific diagnostics.
Common fixes
- Restore a blown or interrupted radio power connection after identifying the cause.
- Secure or repair loose, corroded, or damaged radio connectors.
- Repair a broken or shorted CAN wire to the radio.
- Correct a verified gateway message-routing fault.
- Replace or configure the radio only after its power, ground, and network connection are confirmed.
Can I keep driving?
This code usually affects radio availability rather than basic driving, but other communication codes may indicate a wider electrical issue. If other vehicle functions are also affected, address those faults before relying on the vehicle.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
