What it means
The reporting module has lost communication with headlamp leveling control module A. It sets this code when expected messages from that module are not received for a specified time.
How it works
Headlamp leveling control module A operates the automatic aim adjustment for its associated headlamp system. The reporting module expects network messages from module A and stores U0181 when those messages stop arriving for the specified time. The code identifies a communication loss; it does not prove that the leveling module itself has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Module power or ground fault
- Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
- CAN bus short or open circuit
- Headlamp leveling module failure
- Low battery voltage
Symptoms
- Headlamp leveling warning light or message
- Headlamp aim does not adjust
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules and note freeze-frame data and related communication codes to see whether the fault coincided with low battery voltage or affected other network modules.
- Check whether headlamp leveling warnings are present and whether the affected lamps move during the vehicle's normal self-check, if equipped.
- Inspect module A's connectors, power and ground wiring, and CAN wiring for looseness, corrosion, water, or damage.
- Check module A's power supply and ground under the manufacturer's specified test conditions.
- Test the CAN network at the module connector for opens, shorts, or abnormal communication, following the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer specifications.
- If power, ground, and network wiring pass, use vehicle-specific diagnostics to assess module A and gateway message routing before replacing a module.
Common fixes
- Charge or replace a weak battery and clear codes after confirming stable system voltage.
- Repair loose, corroded, or water-damaged connectors at headlamp leveling module A.
- Repair damaged power, ground, or CAN wiring to module A.
- Correct a CAN network or gateway fault identified by testing.
- Replace or program headlamp leveling control module A only after its supplies and network communication have been verified.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain driveable, but automatic headlamp aim may not compensate for load or road angle, which can reduce visibility or dazzle other drivers. Avoid night driving if the beams are visibly mis-aimed, and have the system checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
