What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the parking assist module. Parking assist functions may be limited or unavailable.
How it works
The parking assist module processes information used by parking sensors or related assistance features and communicates it to other vehicle modules. U0159 sets when a control module stops receiving the parking assist module's expected network messages for the required time.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Parking assist module power or ground fault
- Damaged network wiring or connector
- Parking assist module failure
- Low system voltage
Symptoms
- Parking assist warning or message
- Parking sensors or assist functions may be unavailable
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication codes and review freeze-frame data for low voltage or network faults that coincide with U0159.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation, since low system voltage can disrupt communication.
- Inspect the parking assist module's power, ground, network connector, and wiring for damage, moisture, corrosion, or loose connections.
- Use a scan tool to check whether the parking assist module responds, then confirm whether the parking sensors or assist features are unavailable.
- If power and ground are correct, test the network wiring for opens or shorts and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring tests correctly, investigate the parking assist module or a gateway routing fault.
Common fixes
- Restore battery charge or repair a charging-system fault.
- Clean, dry, and secure a loose or corroded parking assist module connector or ground.
- Repair damaged network wiring or connector terminals.
- Repair or replace the parking assist module if its power, ground, and network circuits are sound.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive cautiously if the vehicle otherwise operates normally, but do not rely on parking sensors or parking assistance while the fault is present. Use mirrors and direct observation, and stop safely if additional warnings or vehicle-function problems appear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
