What it means
A control module has stopped receiving expected messages from the head-up display. The display or functions that depend on it may be unavailable.
How it works
The head-up display module sends information over the vehicle network so it can be shown in the driver's line of sight. U0158 sets when a control module does not receive the display module's expected messages for the required time.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Head-up display power or ground fault
- Damaged network wiring or connector
- Head-up display module failure
- Low system voltage
Symptoms
- Head-up display unavailable
- Warning lights or messages
- Other communication codes
How to diagnose it
- Scan all modules for communication codes and review freeze-frame data to see whether low voltage or other network faults occurred with U0158.
- Check battery condition and charging-system operation, because low system voltage can interrupt module communication.
- Inspect the head-up display module's power, ground, network connector, and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage.
- Use a scan tool to check whether the head-up display module responds and confirm whether the display is unavailable.
- If its power and ground are correct, test the network wiring for opens or shorts and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring tests correctly, investigate the head-up display module or a gateway routing fault.
Common fixes
- Restore battery charge or repair a charging-system fault.
- Clean and secure the head-up display module's loose or corroded connector or ground.
- Repair damaged network wiring or a connector fault.
- Repair or replace the head-up display module if its power, ground, and network circuits are sound.
Can I keep driving?
If the head-up display is the only affected feature, you can generally drive while relying on the normal instrument panel and keeping your attention on the road. Heed any other warning lights or messages, since U0158 can occur alongside broader network faults.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
