OBD-II fault code

U0149: Lost Communication With Gateway D

What it means

The reporting module has lost communication with Gateway D on the vehicle network. It sets this code when expected messages from that gateway are not received for a specified time.

How it works

Gateway D routes messages between vehicle networks so connected modules can share information. This code sets when the reporting module stops receiving expected messages from Gateway D for the specified time; possible causes include lost power or ground, damaged CAN wiring, a gateway fault, or low battery voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Gateway D power or ground fault
  2. Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
  3. CAN bus short or open circuit
  4. Gateway D module failure
  5. Low battery voltage

Symptoms

  • Intermittent or inoperative vehicle features
  • Warning lights or messages
  • Other communication codes
  • Difficulty starting or operating some systems

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data to find when Gateway D communication was lost and which other modules logged related codes.
  2. Check battery condition and charging-system operation to rule out a low-voltage event affecting Gateway D or other modules.
  3. Use the vehicle's network diagram to identify which networks and functions rely on Gateway D, then see whether the communication loss is limited to those areas.
  4. Inspect Gateway D connectors and accessible CAN wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, water entry, chafing, or damage.
  5. Test Gateway D power and ground under load and check the relevant network circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the manufacturer's specifications.
  6. If supply and network tests pass, follow the manufacturer's procedure to determine whether Gateway D has failed before replacing or configuring it.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak battery and correct a charging-system fault.
  • Clean and secure Gateway D connectors and repair damaged wiring or terminals.
  • Repair a Gateway D power or ground fault found during testing.
  • Repair an open, short, or poor connection in the affected CAN network.
  • Replace or configure Gateway D only after the diagnostic procedure confirms a gateway fault.

Can I keep driving?

A loss of Gateway D messages can disable features or affect starting on networks it routes. Verify that essential systems work before driving, and stop if braking, lighting, or another safety-related function is affected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
