OBD-II fault code

U0148: Lost Communication With Gateway C

What it means

The reporting module has lost communication with Gateway C on the vehicle network. It sets this code when expected messages from that gateway are not received for a specified time.

How it works

Gateway C routes messages between vehicle networks and passes information between modules. This code sets when the reporting module does not receive expected messages from Gateway C for the specified time; a gateway power or ground fault, damaged network connection, CAN bus fault, module failure, or low battery voltage can cause the loss.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Gateway C power or ground fault
  2. Damaged or corroded network wiring or connectors
  3. CAN bus short or open circuit
  4. Gateway C module failure
  5. Low battery voltage

Symptoms

  • Intermittent or inoperative vehicle features
  • Warning lights or messages
  • Other communication codes
  • Difficulty starting or operating some systems

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan all modules and review freeze-frame data to determine when Gateway C went offline and whether other modules logged communication faults at the same time.
  2. Check battery condition and charging-system operation because low voltage can disrupt gateway communication.
  3. Use the vehicle network diagram to identify which modules and features depend on Gateway C, then check whether communication loss is confined to one network.
  4. Inspect Gateway C connectors and accessible CAN wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, water entry, chafing, or other damage.
  5. With the correct wiring information, test Gateway C power and ground under load and check the relevant CAN circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections against the manufacturer's specifications.
  6. If power, ground, and network wiring pass, follow the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to assess Gateway C before replacing or configuring it.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak battery and repair charging-system faults.
  • Clean and secure Gateway C connectors and repair damaged terminals or wiring.
  • Repair a Gateway C power or ground fault identified by testing.
  • Repair a CAN bus open, short, or poor connection on the affected network.
  • Replace or configure Gateway C only if testing confirms a module fault.

Can I keep driving?

Features on networks routed through Gateway C may be intermittent or unavailable, and starting or other systems can be affected. Check that essential functions work before driving, and do not drive if a safety-critical system is impaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
