OBD-II fault code

U0113: Lost Communication With Emissions Critical Control Information

What it means

A control module has lost communication with emissions-critical control information. The code identifies missing information, not the cause or a particular failed component.

At a glance

  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

This code reports that a module has lost emissions-critical control information expected over the vehicle network. It identifies missing information rather than naming a particular sensor, emissions part, or failed module. U0113 sets when that information is unavailable long enough for the receiving module to register a communication fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Module power or ground fault
  2. Damaged communication bus wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Faulty emissions control module
  5. Low system voltage

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Emissions warning
  • Reduced engine power
  • Other communication codes

How to diagnose it

  1. Read and save codes and freeze-frame data from all modules, looking for the sender named by related codes and any low-voltage or network faults.
  2. Check battery condition and the relevant fuses, power, and ground connections for the modules involved in the emissions-control messages.
  3. Inspect the communication-bus wiring and connectors serving those modules for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or water intrusion.
  4. Use a scan tool to identify which modules are offline and whether the emissions-critical information loss is current or intermittent.
  5. If module supplies and connectors check out, test the affected network segment and gateway routing against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Charge or replace a weak battery and repair poor battery connections.
  • Replace a failed fuse or repair a faulty module power or ground connection identified by testing.
  • Repair damaged communication wiring or clean and secure a corroded connector.
  • Repair a confirmed gateway or network fault that prevents emissions-critical messages from reaching the receiving module.
  • Replace or reprogram a module only when testing confirms it cannot provide or receive the required information.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may run with reduced power and the emissions system may not operate correctly, so arrange diagnosis promptly and avoid unnecessary long trips. Stop if the engine runs badly or a serious warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
