OBD-II fault code

U0096: Vehicle Communication Bus H (+) High

What it means

A fault is detected on the positive conductor of vehicle communication bus H; the code descriptor specifies a high condition. Which functions are affected depends on the vehicle’s network design.

How it works

Bus H carries data between the modules connected to that network, using a positive conductor and a matching negative conductor. A module or gateway sets U0096 when it detects the bus H positive line at an unexpectedly high level, which can disrupt messages on that network.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to voltage or damaged bus H positive wire
  2. Loose or corroded connector
  3. A module or gateway fault

Symptoms

  • Communication faults in modules using bus H
  • Warning lights or messages
  • Functions relying on bus H may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record which modules report U0096 and any related communication codes, then note freeze-frame or event data to see when the fault occurred.
  2. Check the vehicle information for the bus H wiring route and connected modules, then inspect the positive wire and its connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with a power wire.
  3. With the vehicle powered as specified by the manufacturer, monitor bus H positive data or measure the line as the service information directs to confirm whether the high condition is present.
  4. Check for a short to voltage in the bus H positive conductor, isolating sections or modules only as the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure specifies.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test the gateway and connected modules for a fault that could be pulling bus H positive high.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded bus H connector.
  • Repair damaged bus H positive wiring or correct a short to voltage.
  • Repair or replace a faulty gateway or module after circuit checks identify it as the source.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle drives normally and no safety-related functions are affected, limit driving to essential trips while you arrange diagnosis. Stop if steering, braking, shifting, or other critical functions become unreliable, since modules on bus H may lose communication.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
