What it means
The active radiator air flow control module A reports a performance condition. Active grille shutter operation is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Active radiator air-flow control module A moves the grille shutters to manage airflow through the radiator area. This code sets when shutter movement does not match expected performance, such as when the actuator is lazy or the linkage is iced, so the shutters may stick, move slowly, or remain in one position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shutter actuator lazy
- Linkage iced
Symptoms
- Check-engine warning light
- Active grille shutters may stick, move slowly, or remain in one position
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded shutter position with reported position or observed movement using a scan tool.
- Inspect the grille for ice, dirt, stones, or other obstruction that could prevent the shutters from travelling freely.
- With the vehicle off and the relevant safety precautions observed, inspect the shutter linkage and actuator for damage, binding, or looseness.
- Check module A wiring and connectors for corrosion, damage, or loose connections that could interrupt actuator operation.
- If no obstruction or wiring fault is found, command the actuator through its range and compare movement with the manufacturer's procedures.
Common fixes
- Remove ice, debris, or other obstruction from the grille shutter assembly.
- Repair or replace a damaged or binding shutter linkage.
- Restore a loose, corroded, or damaged module A electrical connection.
- Replace the lazy actuator or module A if commanded movement remains impaired after other faults are ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if engine temperature stays normal, but avoid prolonged high-speed or heavy-load driving while shutter position is uncertain. Stop if the engine overheats; shutters stuck closed can restrict cooling, while shutters stuck open can affect warm-up and efficiency.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
