OBD-II fault code

P2E86: Battery Charger B Input Voltage Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The input voltage sensor of battery charger B reports a high fault. Mains input voltage measurement is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Battery charger B uses its input-voltage sensor to measure mains power at the charging inlet. The control module monitors the sensor signal; this code sets when that signal is above its expected range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to battery positive, an open sensor, or poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and read live input-voltage sensor B data while the charger is connected.
  2. Check whether the charge status indicator shows a fault and whether charging fails or interrupts alongside the high reading.
  3. Inspect charger B's sensor connector for loose pins, corrosion, or other poor contact that could disrupt the circuit.
  4. With the correct wiring information, check the signal wire for a short to battery positive and test the sensor circuit for an open.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test sensor B and compare its output with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and secure the sensor B connector.
  • Repair corroded or damaged terminals affecting the sensor circuit.
  • Repair an open circuit or signal wire short to battery positive.
  • Replace the input-voltage sensor or charger B module if testing confirms an internal open.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible, but charger B may not start or may interrupt charging, leaving the battery with less charge than expected. Use a reliable charging method and avoid depending on this charger until the signal fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
