OBD-II fault code

P2DDA: EVAP System Leak Detection Pump Performance/Stuck Off

What it means

The EVAP leak detection pump does not start when commanded. Motor seized, relay failure, or driver fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The EVAP leak detection pump pressurizes or draws on the fuel-vapor system so the engine control module can check for leaks. The module monitors whether the pump starts when commanded. This code sets when the pump does not start, which can prevent the EVAP leak test from completing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pump motor seized
  2. Pump relay failed
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Loose-cap warning may appear

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other EVAP codes to see whether the pump failed during a system leak test.
  2. Check that the fuel cap is seated, then inspect accessible EVAP hoses and pump connections for disconnection or damage.
  3. Inspect the leak detection pump connector, relay connections, and wiring for corrosion, loose contacts, or chafing.
  4. Use a scan tool to command the pump and check whether it receives the commanded control and power using the manufacturer's specified procedure.
  5. If power and wiring are intact, test the pump motor and relay for seizure or failure as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or replace a damaged fuel cap if it does not seal correctly.
  • Reconnect or repair damaged EVAP hoses and pump wiring.
  • Replace a failed pump relay if testing confirms it does not switch correctly.
  • Replace the leak detection pump if its motor is seized or it fails the commanded-operation test.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive if the vehicle runs normally, but the EVAP system may not pass an emissions inspection and fuel vapors may escape. If you smell strong fuel or find a leak, park safely and address it promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
