What it means
The EVAP leak detection pump control circuit reports a performance condition. Pump response or current draw outside calibration.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EVAP leak detection pump helps the engine control module check whether the fuel-vapor system is sealed. The module monitors the pump control circuit's response and current draw when the pump is commanded. This code sets when that response falls outside the calibrated performance range, even if the pump has not completely stopped working.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump output degraded
- High-resistance contact
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Possible smell of fuel near tank or engine bay
- Failed emissions inspection
- Loose-cap warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related EVAP codes to identify whether the pump fault occurred during a leak test.
- Check that the fuel cap is present and seated, then inspect accessible EVAP hoses and connections for disconnection or damage.
- Inspect the leak detection pump connector and control-circuit wiring for corrosion, loose contacts, or chafing.
- Use a scan tool to command the pump and compare its response and available current data with the manufacturer's specified test.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test pump operation and circuit resistance as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reseat or replace a damaged fuel cap if it does not seal correctly.
- Reconnect or repair damaged EVAP hoses and pump-circuit wiring.
- Clean or repair corroded, high-resistance pump connector contacts.
- Replace the leak detection pump if its output remains outside specification after circuit checks.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the vehicle runs normally, but the EVAP fault can cause an emissions inspection failure and may let fuel vapors escape. If you smell strong fuel or see a leak, park safely and have the source checked promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
