What it means
The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the engine oil pressure sensor/switch c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Engine oil pressure sensor/switch C sends the ECM an electrical signal related to oil pressure. P2D8F sets when the C-circuit signal falls below the expected range, which can happen if the signal is shorted to ground, the sensor is internally shorted, or a corroded connection disrupts the circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Oil-pressure warning light may be on
- Check-engine light may be on
- Oil-pressure gauge may read abnormally or fluctuate
- Engine may run noisily if oil pressure is actually low
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and sensor C live data; a signal stuck unusually low helps confirm the circuit condition and when it appeared.
- Check the oil level and listen for abnormal engine noise so a true low-pressure condition is not mistaken for an electrical fault.
- Inspect sensor C and its connector for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, loose fit, and wiring rubbed through to ground.
- With the manufacturer's wiring diagram, check the C signal wire for a short to ground and inspect connector terminal condition.
- If wiring and terminals pass, test sensor/switch C and compare the circuit reading with actual oil pressure using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor C connector terminals.
- Repair the C signal wire where it is shorted to ground or damaged.
- Replace sensor/switch C if it is internally shorted or fails its specified test.
- Address a confirmed mechanical oil-pressure problem if actual pressure is low.
Can I keep driving?
Treat an oil-pressure warning or engine noise as possible real low oil pressure: stop the engine and check the oil before driving further. If the engine is quiet and the warning is off, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon because the low circuit reading may not reveal actual pressure.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
